Getting started with 3D scanning for inspections
Written by Wenn Property
3D scanning has revolutionized how construction professionals carry out inspections. With LiDAR technology in modern smartphones, you can now capture precise 3D models of rooms and buildings – right from your pocket.
Why 3D scanning?
Traditional inspections involve manual measurements, handwritten notes, and countless photos. The process is time-consuming and error-prone. With 3D scanning you can:
- Save time: Scan a room in under a minute
- Increase precision: LiDAR provides accuracy within 1–2 cm
- Document everything: Walls, ceilings, windows, and doors are captured automatically
- Share easily: Send the project with a single link
How to get started
1. Check your device
You need an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR sensor. This includes iPhone 12 Pro and newer, and iPad Pro (2020 and newer).
2. Download Wenn Property
The app is available on the App Store. The Starter plan is free and lets you try with 2 projects per month.
3. Make your first scan
Open the app, create a new project, and point the camera at the room you want to scan. Move slowly around the room – the app guides you through the process.
4. See the result
After scanning, you automatically get a 3D model with floor plan, dimensions, and cross-sections. You can add notes, photos, and annotations directly in the model.
Tips for better scans
- Good lighting: Make sure there is enough light in the room
- Move slowly: Fast movement can result in incomplete scans
- Overlap: Let the camera see the same area from multiple angles
- Start in a corner: Begin scanning from a corner and work your way around systematically
